pinch me, i'm dreaming.

I am still in utter awe from this wonderful and breathtaking exhibit. Before walking through the corridor, I had my headphones in hand to listen to the much needed audio tour given by Hamish Bowles and a few excerpts from Oscar de La Renta- who was lucky enough to work with the much revered Cristobal Balenciaga.  Anyways, I walked in to the dark room and stared at the first piece of the exhibit a "flamenco" styled pink gown with ruffles at the end. (Unfortunately I wasn't able to take pictures, but I found a few online to show you a glimpse)

This is the dress that I first laid my star-struck eyes on.

photo by Catherine Bigelow from SFGate

Following that dress were vignettes featuring his well-known work in black, a color which allowed him to pay more attention to the tailoring of a garment. The pieces consisted of slimming sleek evening dresses, a lacy wonder with a pink bow, day suits, and an absolutely wonderful ball gown with a beaded gold bodice. Upon the end of the corridor I was greeted by a yellow lace ball gown, a red lace a-line dress reminiscent of the dress Lady Gaga wore to meet the Queen of England, and some of the most artistic work Balenciaga ever compiled. These architectural dresses were innovative, daring, and even beyond our own time. At this point I was not only in heaven, I was sure I was in a dream. The rest of the exhibition featured his work influenced by dance in Spain, the matadors, the catholic church, the working women in the south of Spain, the royal side of Spain, and the art of Spain. Balenciaga truly drew inspiration from his country and this exhibit does a wonderful job of explaining it. At first glance its magic, but if you stop and lean in examining every last bead, seam, and detail it becomes deeper than magic. His work is what my blog is all about, finding art in clothes. I was so inspired, I was left breathless. The exhibit closes in July and I do recommend it!

What I picked up  at the gift shop:

This colored pencil case called to me above the t-shirt and other memorabilia type of things.

The postcard set features some of the pieces displayed in the exhibit, but I full recommend going in person. It is a dream and I a starry eyed dreamer.
